The workforce development programs listed here are intended to prepare Massachusetts high school students for careers in the workforce.  This Fact Sheet lists data for three separate programs, funded under the 2006 Economic Stimulus Bill, c. 123 of the Acts of 2006, sections 91 and 92.  Those programs are:

School-to-Career Connecting Activities programs:  Through local Workforce Investment Boards, Connecting Activities funds pay for staff to recruit employers and prepare and place students in brokered work-based learning internships.

Total appropriated under 2006 Economic Stimulus Bill - $7,129,687

CS-Squared programs: CS-Squared funding supports teams of school-community liaisons who build and strengthen local partnerships, leverage multiple funding sources, and develop programming that provides work experience and other real-world activities for students in Massachusetts. (1)

Total appropriated under 2006 Economic Stimulus Bill - $734,400

Longwood Medical and Academic Area (LMA) Gateway Program: This program is a partnership between the John D. O’Bryant High School in Boston and MASCO, Inc., a non-profit organization representing medical and research institutions, for after-school tutorials, mentoring, and science-based internships in the Longwood Medical Center area.

Note 1: The CS-Squared programs are managed by the Commonwealth Corporation.

Note 2:  The $1.5 million in funding for the LMA Gateway Program is appropriated over a four-year period.

Note 3: The Massachusetts Work-Based Learning Plan is a diagnostic, goal-setting and performance based assessment tool designed to drive learning and productivity for students participating in structured workplace internships.  Level A is "brokered" internship and co-op placements for students; Level B is "targeted" internship or co-op placements for students who score in the warning/failing or needs-improvement levels on the MCAS test; Level C is "integrated work and learning placements" for students who score in the warning/failing level on the MCAS test.

Note 4:  In the case of the School-to-Career Activities programs, leveraged funding comes from participating employers, which are required to provide a 200 percent match per grant in wages to participating students.
